Domestic Assault is defined as intentionally inflicting  bodily harm or causing fear of immediate bodily harm upon a family or household member.

The definition of family or household member is very broad and can include someone you live, or have lived with, a blood relative, a spouse or ex spouse, a lover or ex lover or someone you share a child with.

Domestic assault charges are classified as misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor or felony depending on a number of factors.  If there is an allegation of strangulation the case will most likely be charged out as a felony.
